Varicose veins result from poor blood circulation in the legs. They can be prevented using certain measures, and treated if they appear.

Veins and their blood transport function

The venous system consists of a set of blood vessels of different sizes, like small pipes, its function is to transport deoxygenated blood to the heart. The blood is then pumped to the lungs to eliminate waste and be reoxygenated. Once it is purified, the blood returns to the heart, which in turn pumps it to different organs and parts of the body.

Sometimes, veins are unable to perform their function as vessels and carriers to ensure that blood returns to the heart. When fighting gravity and other difficulties, like loss of elasticity, veins dilate to get the blood to its destination. Varicose veins, which are permanently dilated veins, are a physical manifestation of this problem.

Rest heals the body and has been shown to lessen the risk of heart trouble and psychological problems.

Heavy legs syndrome

What is heavy legs syndrome?

Heavy legs syndrome is the term used to describe a set of subjective symptoms which result from chronic venous insufficiency, a health problem affecting the veins in the legs. The purpose of veins is to bring blood back to the heart to ensure effective blood flow. To do this, they must work against gravity. Veins normally do this owing to their elastic nature, to the contraction of muscles that surround them, and to the presence of valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards.

Back pain for many people is a health problem that can interfere with the joy of winter and put a damper on our enthusiasm. Here is how to avoid it.

The back, the pillar of the human body

Each day, your back takes on tremendous pressure and performs a number of functions: it supports the majority of your body weight, performs a number of movements and takes on part of your stress and emotional tensions. Because it is regularly put under strain by a number of "assailants", the defence mechanisms are sometimes put to the test. This is why many people develop back pain at some point in the course of their lifetime.

Whether caused by a wrong move, bad posture, a bad fall or build up over the years, back pain can slow down your pace significantly. Some people must deal with chronic back pain on a daily basis, especially those suffering from osteoarthritis. Fortunately, for most of us, back pain only strikes occasionally and for a short period of time.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs with potentially serious consequences. This is why early diagnosis and adequate treatment are essential.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE LUNGS?

Lungs are essential organs to life. Their main function is to provide oxygen to the bloodstream through respiration. This oxygen is then transported to different body cells, which allows them to function. Lungs also have the function of eliminating certain waste produced by the body, such as carbon dioxide (CO2).

The lungs are divided into sections, called "lobes". The right lung has three lobes and the left has two. Fresh air passes inside the lungs through a network of airways which includes the nose and bronchi.

Winter Driving

Along with colder temperatures, snow, and ice, winter also brings potentially dangerous driving conditions. Slippery roads and decreased visibility can make driving in Canadian winters a challenge. Get prepared by following a few simple tips, provided by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Automobile Association.

Slow down – Fog, black ice, slush or snow-covered roads can make driving dangerous. Drive slower and leave plenty of distance between vehicles.

Get winter tires – Traction is the key to good movement, turning and stopping on wet, slushy or icy surfaces. Check tires and tire pressure at least once a month when tires are cold and remember that tire air pressure decreases in colder weather. Winter tires provide additional traction in colder weather.

Top-up windshield fluid - Fill up on winter washer fluid and replace wiper blades that streak. Make sure there is enough windshield washer fluid in the reservoir and that it is rated in the -40C temperature range. Carry an extra jug in the vehicle.

Keep the gas tank topped up - When driving in bad weather, think caution, plan ahead and make sure you have enough fuel. Keep the fuel tank at least half full.

See and be seen - clear all snow from the hood, roof, windows and lights. Clear all windows of fog or ice. If visibility becomes poor, find a place to safely pull off the road as soon as possible.

Get an emergency car kit – Have the appropriate safety and emergency winter equipment always stored in your car. The basic emergency kit for cars should include the following items

  • Water – in plastic bottles so they won't break if frozen (change every six months)
  • Blanket
  • Extra clothing and shoes
  • First aid kit – with seatbelt cutter
  • Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
  • Crank flashlight
  • Whistle – in case you need to attract attention
  • Roadmaps
  • Copy of your emergency plan

Also keep these inside your trunk:

  • Sand, salt or cat litter (non clumping)
  • Antifreeze/windshield washer fluid
  • Tow rope
  • Jumper cables
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Warning light or road flares

Print or download the Emergency car kit checklist. Check off the items for your car emergency kit as you accumulate them.
